Concan Weekend
By Jeff Myers

Besides spring showers, April means the first of BMOA’s semi-annual British Invasions of the Texas Hill Country – the Concan weekend!  Of all BMOA’s annual events, this is one that folks always leave with a promise to stay longer next year.  Here is your chance to keep that promise.  The 2010 Concan weekend is April 9 - 11.

For those who have never been, Concan is located seven miles from Garner State Park in one of the finest spots of the Texas Hill Country.  The hilly, and at times mountainous, terrain provides beautiful views from twisty roads that are fun on most any motorcycle.  Adding to the scenery, this event coincides with the blooming of the Texas Wildflowers.

Rides are planned for both Saturday and Sunday.  Saturday’s core route consists of what many in the club fondly refer to as the Holy Trinity of roads – FM 335, 336, and 337.  This route is worth about 130 miles, but in past years, those inclined have covered well over 300 miles on their vintage bikes by continuing over some of the other fantastic pavement in the area.

Saturday is also a good time to visit Allen Johncock’s Lone Star Motorcycle Museum, in Vanderpool.  We complete the weekend with a Sunday morning breakfast ride to a surprise destination.  Significant others, who choose not to ride, typically relax along the Frio River or take advantage of the antique and craft shopping in the nearby towns of Utopia, Leaky, Camp Wood, and Sabinal.

Our group stays at the ideally suited cabins at Neal’s Lodges, which overlook the cool clear waters of the Frio River.  Floating in the Frio with a favorite beverage is a great way to end a particularly warm day of motorcycling.  If, in the past, you roomed with David “Twitchy” Porter, you learned the Frio is also allegedly suitable for bathing.  Note that it was best to be upstream – and blind.

Per tradition, Friday night will consist of our hallmark Food & Frozen Refreshment Feast.  I am proud to announce that our club’s exceptional cooking and blending talent will again be on display.  Saturday evening, we typically dine in Neal’s recently expanded and remodeled Café.  After dinner, Saturday’s festivities continue until all remaining refreshments are properly disposed of.

When reserving your cabin, be sure to ask for the BMOA rate (older cabin / remodeled cabin):

1 - $55.00 / 85.00
2 - $75.00 / 95.00
3 - $87.50 / 144.00
4 - $95.00
5+ - $105.00

Neal’s provides BMOA members with towels and linens as part of our group package.  There are a limited number of cabins reserved for BMOA, so ring Neal’s at 830-232-6118 and get yours now.
